Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in New York City

If you’re struggling with depression and medication hasn’t helped, it might be time to try something new. TMS has been FDA-approved for the treatment of depression since 2008, and it’s been proven effective in over 30 clinical studies. TMS uses a safe magnetic field to stimulate the brain and relieve the symptoms of depression.

Effective

The majority of patients experience relief within several weeks.

Lasting

Patients improve during treatment and continue to feel better after treatment is complete.

Non-invasive

TMS is an outpatient treatment that uses magnets the strength of an MRI placed on the head.

Virtually free of side effects

The most common side effect is headache, experienced briefly by some patients.

UPDATED REVIEW--
Madison Avenue TMS was an exemplary practice in every respect. The fact that as a Medicaid insured-person that I could even get TMS, which was facilitated and made extremely easy for me at every step by the wonderful staff, is still mind boggling to me in a world where cutting-edge medical practices are often exclusively available to the super rich. The care I received was wonderful. My technician, Michael, was kind, thoughtful, attentive, and careful in his administration of the treatment. My questions (and they were myriad) were always answered, and I really felt cared about as an individual and that my treatment journey was important. He was fantastic, which I really this is emblematic of this practice. Thank you all so much, from the bottom of my heart.

ORIGINAL REVIEW--
I haven't even started my TMS at Madison Avenue yet, and they are already one of the best mental health practices I have ever worked with. Dr. Woo is empathetic, kind, understanding and respectful, and Brittney, who answers my emails, is incredibly nice and always goes above and beyond in being helpful. The two of them have really made me feel supported and hopeful during an extremely difficult time in my life. Thank you! <3

I simply do not have enough terrific things to say about Dr. Woo, his absolutely wonderful, caring, friendly, professional and compassionate staff as well as TMS in general. I began my TMS/Anxiety Protocol treatments back in mid November when I was feeling incredible depression, anxiety and suicidal ideations. 44 treatments later, I feel as if my brain-chemistry has been completely reset and even cleansed. It's quite an amazing metamorphosis which took place and I'm still in awe of how thoroughly TMS actually works. For me, it really was a miracle cure. I look forward to returning for a second round of treatments 6 months from now. If you genuinely are suffering from depression, TMS can be your lifeline to better mental health.

Absolutely amazing! This is my second course of TMS with Dr. Woo and his staff. In addition to being highly professional, Dr Woo is one of the most kind and compassionate medical practitioners I have ever encountered. He truly cares about his patients. He listens to all of our concerns and always is willing to advocate for us whenever needed. His staff is equally caring, and knowledgeable about Brainsway and TMS in general. I highly recommend Madison Ave TMS. And yes, TMS definitely works. I am living proof of that. 5-star+++++

I highly recommend Dr. Woo and the Madison Avenue team. I have been a patient of Dr. Woo for over 10 years and even followed him when he changed practices! He is a very sensible and compassionate doctor -- 2 characteristics that are much needed in the medical profession and sadly hard to find nowadays!

I’ve been working with Dr. Woo for several years and he is an amazing psychiatrist. He has helped me over many difficult periods of my life, always treating me with compassion. It’s hard to find a good psychiatrist but I can attest that Dr. Woo is wonderful at his practice of psychiatry. I have referred many people to his practice as a patient and a fellow medical provider myself. I’ve done a few rounds of TMS with the practice, which has proven to be a effective treatment for my refractory depression. In addition, all the staff that works with him has been amazing.

I have had the good fortune of working with Dr. Woo for the last five years. He is excellent at what he does: he is deeply commited to his patients and his profession. Perceptive, thoughtful, conscentious and sympathetic, one always feels heard, understood and cared for in his presence. I always look forward to our next appointment. When life gets tough and starts throwing those ugly punches at me, I can smile and say, "is that all you got, George?, knowing that Dr. Woo is in my corner. I wouldn't have it any other way. I know he will never throw in the towel.

Depression and TMS in New York City

In a report published in 2018, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene found that approximately 9% of adults in New York City suffered from depression in 2016.* That’s almost 1 in 10 New Yorkers!

The same report also demonstrated that while depression occurred in men and women at the same rates, other factors like age, education, household income, employment status, insurance status, chronic disease diagnosis, and perceived safety were linked to the prevalence of depression.

The Majority of New Yorkers with Depression May Not Seek Treatment

Treatment for depression in new york

One of the benefits of living in an urban area is the widespread availability and accessibility of services. Despite the fact that there are a broad range of treatments available for depression in New York, in 2016, 62% did not receive treatment for depression medication (including therapy, counseling, TMS, rTMS, or Deep TMS in New York City).₁ This could be due to any number of reasons - cost/insurance availability, feared side effects, inability to recognize one’s symptoms, an unwillingness to seek help, or many others.

Psychiatrists in New York can help. In TMS, New York City residents may find a clinically-effective, low-stress, and non-invasive treatment plan that’s often completely covered by insurance.
